Ford has finally released the pricing for the up and coming 2009 Flex crossover. The vehicle will be hitting dealerships this summer with a price tag starting at $28,995. This will include any shipping costs – but not any of the special features that can be added to one of the three trim levels.
These trim levels will all start off with a price tag higher than $30,000. Ford built the Flex as a six to seven seater CUV that will come in front wheel drive or all wheel drive configurations. The AWD Flex Limited is expected to be $37,255 before any of the special options have been added on to it.
The 2009 Ford Flex crossover is an SUV that seats up to seven people and was built to take the place of the minivan lineup that Ford is accustomed to making. Ford was planning on giving the Mercury a chance to get the same design as the Flex – but it seems that Lincoln is next in line.
Sources say the Flex will bow first, allowing it to have its moment in the sun before the Lincoln version is added to the lineup, perhaps a year later. It is in keeping with a strategic plan going forward to place more emphasis on the Lincoln premium brand than on Mercury. At the recent L.A. auto show, Mark Fields, Ford president of the Americas, said Lincoln will take over as the volume piece of the Lincoln Mercury franchise.
Ford decided that the best time to release their most important vehicle of the year was at the New York International Auto Show. And they found that it was the perfect place to introduce the 2009 Ford Flex. The Ford Flex will replace their usual minivan and will keep them up to date with the other popular crossover vehicles.
This is a vehicle that seeks to change the way that you and I think about Ford by being thoroughly thought out, pleasantly executed and different enough to generate strong opinions, all of which took place on the show floor. The Flex is that it’s a luxury large crossover vehicle (GMC Acadia/Hyundai Veracruz-sized) that is based off the architecture that underpins the Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX.
At the introduction of the 2009 Ford Flex, nobody bothered explaining the naming of Ford’s newest crossover. Flexing what? With about 265 horsepower, it’s not flexing a conspicuous amount of muscle, and the 3.5-liter V-6 isn’t a flex-fuel engine.
Ford displayed a vehicle customized by Funkmaster Flex in New York, but that was an Expedition. The only explanation we can think of is that the Flex offers a great range of interior flexibility, but in this the Flex is no better than many three-row crossovers and certainly offers nowhere near the interior adaptability of the minivans that Ford dropped from its lineup.
Ford and DJ Funkmaster Flex, the hip hop master of car customization, are turning the Funkmaster’s red hot Ford Expedition concept into a limited-edition production SUV.
