The X-MAX’s roots as a variant of the Focus are clearly visible, but the off-roader boasts fresh headlamps, rear light clusters inspired by the S-MAX compact MPV and purposeful wheelÂarch extensions. The four-wheel-drive machine also features practical roof rails, designed to help set it apart from the rest of the Focus range.
A low ride height will compromise the newcomer’s abilities as a true off-roader, but it does bode well for tarmac performance, where the X-MAX promises to uphold Ford’s reputation for class-leading handling. Even so, buyers will still be able to rely on long-travel suspension and an all-wheel-drive transmission to tackle moderate rough terrain.
